Volumetric Milky Way preview

A first look at the new volumetric rendering of the Milky Way in Gaia Sky.

Here is a sneak preview of the new volumetric Milky Way featured in the next version of Gaia Sky.

The video has been captured with a dataset of \( 800 \times 800 \times 80 \) voxels. Two channels (emissive and occlusive) are used to combine the emissive part (gas and bulge) with the dust occlusion. Stars and HII regions are particle-based.

The Galaxy is based on Gaia DR3 data, prepared for Gaia Sky as a particle dataset by Stefan Payne-Wardenaar (check out his Milky Way model), and then converted to a volume as a voxel grid.
